Automotive Powder Coating and E-Coating

Winona Powder Coating provides high-quality powder coating and E-coating services for automotive OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, Tier 2 suppliers, and manufacturers. If you produce virtually any metal components within the automotive industry, Winona’s experience has you covered.

High-Volume Finishing for Automotive OEM and Tier Supplier Programs

Automotive parts need to meet demanding expectations for corrosion resistance, coating consistency, appearance, durability, throughput, and quality documentation. Whether we’re dealing with a product that’s installed inside the vehicle, exposed beneath the chassis, used in a truck or trailer assembly, or even in the engine compartment, there’s no room for compromise in coating appearance or corrosion protection.

Our facilities combine high-volume powder coating and E-coating capacity, automotive-specific experience, certified quality systems, and both powder coating and E-coating under one roof. We finish products for suppliers serving Volkswagen, Chrysler, General Motors, Ford, Jeep, and other automotive brands.

A Coating Process Built for Automotive Requirements

We work with automotive components exposed to a range of demanding conditions: from moisture, road salt, chemicals, and temperature swings to repeated use, vibration, abrasion, impact, and constant visual scrutiny.

The right coating process depends on the part’s material, geometry, location on the vehicle, corrosion risk, appearance requirements, and production volume.

  • Strong corrosion resistance for long-term vehicle use
  • Consistent film thickness across high-volume production runs
  • Coverage for complex geometries, recessed areas, and difficult-to-reach surfaces
  • Durable resistance to wear, impact, chemicals, moisture, and road contaminants
  • Uniform color, gloss, texture, and visual quality
  • Efficient processing for recurring OEM and supplier programs
  • Quality-focused process control and dependable turnaround
  • Packaging and assembly support for downstream production needs

Winona helps automotive manufacturers select a finishing approach that balances protection, performance, cost, and program requirements. Depending on the application, that may include powder coating, E-coating, or an E-coat primer with a powder-coated topcoat.

Automotive Seating Components

Additionally, Winona also specializes in finishing automotive seating components, including seat frames and related metal assemblies produced for OEM and Tier supplier programs. Our experience with high-volume seating work, quality expectations, and repeatable coating processes helps suppliers keep critical production programs moving.

E-Coating for Uniform Corrosion Protection

E-coating is ideal for many automotive finishing applications because it provides reliable coverage on complex parts, including interior surfaces, recessed areas, edges, and tight geometries that can be difficult to coat evenly through spray application.

Before coating, parts move through Winona’s 13-stage pretreatment process, including laser scale removal and zinc phosphate. The E-coat line uses automated indexing to help minimize air-pocket effects as parts enter the tank, supporting more complete and consistent part coverage.

E-coating is especially well suited for automotive components that need:

  • High corrosion resistance
  • Uniform coverage and controlled film thickness
  • Protection for complex shapes and internal features
  • Efficient processing at high production volumes
  • Consistent quality from run to run
  • A cost-effective primer or standalone finish

Winona’s E-coat line can process parts up to 108 inches long, 48 inches wide, and 48 inches high, with a maximum load-bar weight of 2,200 pounds and up to 500 square feet of coverage per load.

E-Coat Primer + Powder-Coated Topcoat

Some automotive parts need the advantages of both processes. An epoxy E-coat primer creates a uniform corrosion-resistant foundation across the entire metal surface, while a powder-coated topcoat adds exterior durability, finish flexibility, and greater protection against handling damage, abrasion, UV exposure, and harsh environmental conditions.

This combined coating process can be particularly valuable for parts that face road salt, moisture, gravel impact, chemical exposure, repeated abrasion, or severe outdoor service. If the powder-coated surface is chipped or damaged, the E-coat layer underneath remains in place to help protect the metal substrate from rust and chemical corrosion.

Using both processes under one roof can also simplify coordination for automotive suppliers that would otherwise need to manage separate primer and topcoat vendors.

Automotive Applications We Support

Winona works with manufacturers and suppliers producing a broad range of automotive, commercial-vehicle, transportation, and specialty-vehicle products.

Some of our common automotive applications include:

  • Automotive seating frames, brackets, recliners, and structural components
  • Interior and exterior vehicle assemblies
  • Truck, trailer, fleet, and work-vehicle components
  • Chassis components, mounts, brackets, and crossmembers
  • RV and recreational-vehicle frames and accessories
  • Electric-vehicle battery housings, frames, and component structures
  • Under-hood and underbody metal components
  • Cargo-management, storage, rack, and rail systems
  • Utility-vehicle and off-road equipment components
  • Automotive aftermarket products and accessories
  • Specialty vehicle, emergency vehicle, and commercial transport assemblies

The best finishing method depends on how the part will be used, where it will be installed, the metal substrate, the expected exposure conditions, part geometry, coating specification, and production requirements.

The Winona Advantage for Automotive Programs:

Automotive Program Experience

Winona serves automotive OEM and supplier programs with the high-volume capability, process consistency, and customer support required for demanding manufacturing environments. We finish products for suppliers connected to Volkswagen, Chrysler, General Motors, Ford, Jeep, and other automotive brands.

Powder Coating and E-Coating in One Place

Few finishing providers offer both powder coating and E-coating capabilities. Winona gives automotive customers access to standalone powder coating, corrosion-resistant E-coating, and combined E-coat-plus-powder systems through one finishing partner.

Capacity for High-Volume Programs

Winona operates two Northern Indiana facilities with two powder coating lines at each location, providing capacity for recurring automotive production programs and the flexibility to support changing volume requirements.

Quality-Focused Processes

Automotive customers need more than a good-looking finish. They need repeatable application, consistent coverage, reliable process control, and a partner that understands the importance of production schedules. Winona’s finishing processes are designed to support those expectations.

Quick Turnaround and Production Support

A coating delay can affect assembly schedules, inventory levels, shipping commitments, and OEM delivery requirements. Winona works to provide responsive communication, dependable turnaround, packaging, and assembly support that help automotive parts move efficiently to the next stage of production.

Proven Industry Recognition

Winona Powder Coating was named a Products Finishing Top Shop award winner for four consecutive years, from 2020 through 2023.
