Steps for the Powder Coating Process

To achieve the desired finish, there needs proper preparation of the surface. The preparation procedure depends on the type of base material. Generally, the surface gets thoroughly cleaned off any oil and grease, then rinsed and later, etched. Etching removes any oxides on the surface, providing a larger surface area for sticking the powder coat. Next is neutralizing the surface where the material gets dipped in a neutralizing solution. Again, however, things vary since each chemical solution works with specific base materials.

After preparation, we then set the ingredients straight for coat application. The commonly used ingredient here is a polymer resin blend, together with other required pigments and additives, allowing for the creation of particular colors and finishes desired. After a complete coating, the part is subjected to an oven of a minimum of 160ºC. After reaching its temperature, the powder melts, flows, creating extensive chemical chains that make the coat more rigid and durable. As it cools, the finish assumes a gel-like consistency till it cools to room temperature, whence it’s completely cured. Once cured, most powder coatings never melt again so that they can be used in a wide range of environments and applications without worry.
